(Food-Beverage-News.Com, September 08, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - A study has been published recently in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The study was being done to determine if post-menopausal women can achieve long-term weight loss and it turned out that adding produce to their diet was not as helpful in the short term but it had a greater effect in the long term.
"People are so motivated when they start a weight-loss program. You can say, 'I'm never going to eat another piece of pie,' and you see the pounds coming off," Bethany Barone Gibbs, the lead investigator, said in a statement according to goerie.com.
"Eating fruits and vegetables may not make as big a difference in your caloric intake. But that small change can build up and give you a better long-term result, because it's not as hard to do as giving up French fries forever."
Gibbs an assistant profession at the University of Pittsburgh department of health and physical activity has said that many factors work against long-term weight loss. People lose out on motivation as it works against the nature of people to stop themselves from eating the food they crave.
"If the goal is to decrease the burden of obesity, the focus must be on long-term strategies because changes in eating behaviours only associated with short-term weight loss are likely ineffective and/or not sustainable," the researchers wrote.
A group of 508 women from Pittsburgh area were divided into two, one was of which met with nutritionists, exercise physiologists and psychologists to reduce fat and the second was offered some general health seminars.
The researchers looked at the effects after six months and four years. At four years most of the intervention group had lost some weight compared to the third group even though that all the women in the study wanted to lose weight and sought help for that.
The study further revealed that eating more produce, less meat and cheese was important for long term weight loss.
After the research, restaurant visits went down for women who lost weight and also those who did not but researchers have speculated that that is mainly due to the economy and the study was not the cause.
