(Food-Beverage-News.Com, August 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- This year, Jamaica’s coffee has fallen short of the average production and the survey of Coffee Industry Board (CIB) in the fields suggests that stats would be higher next year.
Estimates suggest that next year’s produce will increase to 20%, which will compensate this year’s decline of 18.5%. It fell from 8099 tons of cherry to 6600.
Christopher Gentles explained that the decline in production did not reflect in elevation of prices. Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is worth about $25 to $30 per kilogram, whereas non-premium coffee and high mountain coffee is $22 and $15 per kilogram respectively.
Similarly, the export sale of Jamaican coffee is $17.44 million and local sale is $10 million.
The exports of Jamaican coffee this year is 410.7 tons, which is at a rapid decline by 48% from last year. In the year 2009, it was 1352.5 tons in contrast with last year’s 789.9 tons.
This unexpected setback has been caused by coffee borer disease. Production of crop suffered badly due to the disease but from the CIB survey in the fields, an initial report is that next year’s things will drastically change and production will be 20% higher.
In the passing decade, production of Jamaican coffee is at a rapid decline due to drought at some areas as well as crops being hit by diseases. The production, which is now 8099 tons, was 15117 tones six years ago. This inevitable change in production also affects the quality of the product.
Japan gets its share of Jamaican coffee, with 77% this year, more than last year’s 70% but less than previous year’s, which was 86%. Similarly, purchase of Blue Mountain coffee has declined to 317 tons for this year, which is the lowest in the past decade.
The US got 13% of the Jamaican Coffee this year which is more than two times its average imports of Blue Mountain coffee.
The same lowered amount is the case with England and other European countries where imports of JBM has been drastically reduced. However, the sale of JBM in England was greatly elevated during the London Olympics.
