(Food-Beverage-News.Com, January 22, 2016 ) Portland, Oregon -- Last January 12, around 1,120 children participated in a huge Challah Bake event in New York, held at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan. The activity broke the current record held by students in Hong Kong. The old record was done in 2013 with a total of 426 participating students. The final announcement has not yet been issued as the Guinness World Records are still finishing their tally.
The participants were from ages five to thirteen, all of which were taught to knead their own Challah dough. The event was created by a group of local mothers. A total of 7,000 ounces of water, a thousand pounds of flour, and a thousand eggs were used for the entire bake-off. They also used high quality baking tools and equipment such as stainless steel measuring cups and high quality yeast to produce the best kind of Challah bread.
The said event is part of the worldwide Hakhel celebration of Jewish communities which aims to open the eyes of different people to Jewish learning and culture.
Challah is a biblical dough that is traditionally created in a braided form by the Jewish people. It has been a traditional bread made by the Jews for many hundreds of generations.
The children who participated in the event made their own dough and as they let their dough rise, they joined in a game show that was also part of the event.
The risen dough was blessed and braided, then the children took them home to bake. As a souvenir, children were given some snacks as well as their very own apron with the hashtag #KidsChallah.
The majority of the Jewish community participated in the event with educational institutions also supporting and sponsoring them. The children were given a once-in-a-lifetime experience which will become a permanent part of their Jewish heritage.
