Holiday foods that can be dangerous for your cat

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, December 09, 2015 ) New York, NY -- The holiday season is always rich and heavy with mouthwatering foods and delicacies that lingers on the mouth. But we often forget the fact (inadvertently however) that feeding the pets our kinda food may throw their body haywire.

While chocolate is great for human body, it is absolutely hazardous for pets. This is because of a content called theobromine which is similar to caffeine and can be toxic in cats and dogs. Dark chocolate has more theorbromine so make sure that your pet doesn't end up on chocolate. However, milk chocolate is less risky but nevertheless they can give a tummy upset for your pet. Few of the symptoms of chocolate consumption include diarrhea in cats as well as dogs, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, seizures or tremors.

Few of the foods that are bad for your pets include:

1. artificial sweetener called xylitol often found in gums, candies, baked goods etc. that can cause internal hemorrhaging, liver failure etc. Consumption of these foods can lead to stomach or bowel rupture. Even grapes, raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs.

2. Turkey or chicken skin including the gravy offer high amount of fat that prohibits proper digestion in pets. It can trigger a painful illness called pancreatitis. Few of the symptoms include weakness, diarrhea, vomiting etc.

3. Onions are another food that can cause the RBCs to burst in dogs and cats even if it is in small amounts.

4. Foods such as nutmeg, milk or milk products can stimulate bowel movements, tremors, issues in the central nervous system, seizures etc.

5. Even the trash can will smell like a grand buffet to your pet during holiday seasons. Raw meat, paper/string soaked in meat juices, bones etc. will easily attract your pet so make sure you keep the garbage in a place where your pet is unable to reach it. For instance, secure it with a lid and empty the trash regularly.

Cats and Dogs can be persistent at times and often have their own way of getting things. If you cannot resist your dog or cat's begging, here is what you can do. Stuff some turkey, sweet potatoes or pumpkin without nutmeg, mashed potatoes or green beans into a Kong. Oh, there are Kongs available for cats as well. This will keep them busy for a while so you need not have to deal with guilt.
