Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the recent death her father when the Monongah Mining Disaster occurred killing 361 men and leaving a thousand fatherless children. Clayton suggested to her pastor that there be a day, similar to Mother's Day, to honor those fathers. But Clayton's event didn't have repercussions outside of West Virginia.
On June 19, 1910, a Father's Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington. It was initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd whose father was a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day, first celebrated in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. From these obscure beginnings, Father's Day became a national holiday in 1972.
