1. Remove the barbecue mats from their container and wash them completely with soap and water to remove any deposit left over from its manufacturing. Or if preferred, place them in the dishwasher – on the top rack only.
2. When washing grill mats by hand, never use any scratch pads or rough cleaners because it might damage the PTFE coating intended for protection.
3. If you've been grilling food that is particularly messy and you let it dry on the PTFE sheet, you can soak it for a while in soapy water and it'll wipe clean easily. If you've got baked-on sauces you might need to rub a bit with your sponge or soft cloth, but don't succumb to the temptation to use the scratch pad. You can easily get a clean BBQ grill mat without resorting to those measures.
4. Never use metal grill utensils on barbecue grill mats. It is better to use silicone-tipped pincer, a flexible plastic spatula or tongs when cooking loose foods like eggs, cut vegetables and the like.
5. After cleaning the mats, it is better if it will be stored in the same box they came in after they are completely dry. This will protect the PTFE material from getting scratched.
Also, after frequent uses, grill mats might seem marginally frayed in spots. But this should not cause worry because this is only a couple of the fiberglass filaments jabbing out because of being exposed to heat. This doesn't mean that the grill mats are tearing apart. This can be trim off with a sharp pair of scissors.
