For more than 6 months the Gorgrilla Grill Mat owes its remarkable qualities to the Teflon (PTFE) coating which provides a slick surface and is unaffected by the degree of heat encountered in a barbecue grill. PTFE, better known for its commercial brand name of Teflon®, is a substance that is used in many domestic and commercial applications, but it probably best known by the general public for its use in coating non-stick frying pans and other cookware.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a fluorocarbon which is hydrophobic, meaning it cannot be drenched by water or water-containing substances, and it has the third lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. It is the only known surface to which a gecko cannot stick. It has been applied in a wide range of uses, the largest of which is probably the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis which incorporates 20 acres of the material. It has a melting point of 620º F, well above almost all cooking applications including barbecue grills. PTFE is typically used for coating cookware, such as pans, making them non-stick. This compound is non-reactive mainly because its carbon-fluoride contents are very strong. It is preferred since it performs better than acetal and nylon.
