Levy shares that there is a healthier approach to cream cheese frosting. "Beat together an eight-ounce block of low fat cream cheese, a teaspoon of vanilla and a cup of sugar. This low fat frosting comes with lower calories and lower fat content at 59 Calories and 3 grams of fat for every tablespoon. The original frosting recipe can give you 70 Calories of energy and 5 grams of fat per tablespoon."
The healthier alternative to buttercream frosting is to use sifted powdered sugar, says Levy. "For chocolate frosting, melt 16-ounce of bittersweet chocolate together with ¼ cup of low-fat milk. You can spread this frosting on your cupcake or cake and enjoy lesser fat and calorie content."
Levy also suggests substituting an egg requirement with two egg whites or ¼ cup of egg substitute. When this is done, the new recipe should be lower by 60 Calories and 6 grams of fat. "You may also skip eggs by using yogurt instead. Replace an egg by ¼ cup of yogurt to reduce calories and fat. Or you can also combine 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed and 3 tablespoons of water. The resulting new recipe should be rich in omega-3."
