An industry that was, for a long time marked by a simple plastic ice tray or a commercial ice machine churning out standard ice cubes has expanded into a more distinguished market. Nina Jensen, Secretary General of WWF in Norway told The Local that "It seems very strange that the government should provide support to mine Svartisen when we know that it is shrinking because of climate change," she said. "I do not think it is right to create short-term jobs by eating up the last parts of a glacier which is about to disappear."
Svaice, however, says "the amount of ice that we are going to take out is literally just a cup of water in the ocean." Svaice, according to their website, claims to have the "The World's most Environmental Friendly Factory". Their factory runs clean with no waste, zero emissions and leaves only melting water. They are using renewable energy and recyclable packaging. The mining itself leaves no visible wounds in nature.
The ice is mined from the Svartisen glacier. Svart means ‘black' and isen means ‘ice'. The old ice that is deep inside the glacier is darker than fresh ice having an almost dark blue and turquoise color. The ice will be soon be available for sale and will be enjoyed by only a few select people in the world.
