(Food-Beverage-News.Com, May 07, 2014 ) Los Angeles, CA -- Kratom is being utilized for centuries in Southeast Asia and is now gaining popularity over the United States. This drug came from the leaves of Kratom trees, which originate in the tropical woods of Southeast Asia and in the jungles of Thailand.

Southeast Asian natives take Kratom to regain their lost energy, relieve muscle pains after long hours of work in their farm or in the jungle. Thai people use the Kratom leaves to treat diarrhea, others even claim that this lowers blood pressure suitable for people with hypertension. Kratom also contains the same substance found on dark chocolates which is epicatechin that promotes good health. The plant belong to genus Mitragyna, which is said to be a very good stimulant the can be used to improve sexual vigor and performance. Kratom also stimulates the production of melanin which helps protects the skin from sun’s radiation. Some use this to lose weight for it actually affects their appetite. With proper utilization and further studies, Kratom may actually be a breakthrough in the health and drug industry.

While it is instilled in the minds of many that this is a harmless medicinal plant, others, including some in the health department and law enforcement claim that this drug is being abused and is being used as banned stimulant substitutes like synthetic marijuana and bath salts. Officials and health experts alerted the public about the plant’s negative effects on the human body.

To quote a message handed to Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., FDA's Director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, dated July 18, 2013, "Given the widespread availability of Kratom, the dietary supplement industry is concerned about the potential dangers to consumers who may believe that they are consuming a safe, regulated product when they are not,".

Another notable statement about Kratom is from Ken Dickinson, Pharmacist and Director of Marketing for Gaudenzia, a community-based treatment center that provides live-in and outpatient care for substance abuse addicts and persons with mental health issues.

Dickinson says Kratom is potentially dangerous because little is known about its long-term effects. He says users have told him, in large doses, Kratom is a potent high.

When taken frequently, on a high dosage and over a long period of time, one may experience Kratom’s side effects – this basically applies to all the drugs in the market. Kratom’s noted side effects are as follows: nervousness, skin darkening, constipation, aggression, nausea, tremors, delusions, hallucinations and problems in motion coordination. Some cases also report loss of libido, dryness of mouth, irregular urination, vomiting and prolonged sleep. People having low blood pressure, schizophrenia, renal failures, ulcers, hepatic problems and pregnant women are not advised to take Kratom.

Despite these side effects, none of these are found to be fatal or irreversible in nature. On another note, there are no track records of addiction or dependence to the said drug. That being said, is it still safe to buy Kratom like kratom tea, capsules and liquids? Yes, as long as the consumer takes this moderately and responsibly.
