Mojitos, Salsa Dancing & Silicone Bakeware?

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, October 24, 2013 ) Miami, Florida -- South Beach is now home to more than just Mojitos, hard bodies and Lebron James. It's just entered its bid as the new silicone kitchen utensils capital with the official launch of Bakelove.ly's silicone cupcake liners product line on Amazon. While the eCommerce giant already has plenty of choices in the silicone bakeware arena, Bakelove.ly is hoping to win the hearts and minds of consumers with a lifetime replacement guarantee on all of their silicone bakeware products.

The Miami based company opted to launch its silicone bakeware empire because, "We care about the environment and it's simply the safest and "greenest" alternative to disposable paper or tin pans and liners," says public relations director Kenrick Callwood. "They're also much more versatile than the old materials because they are freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe," he adds.

A quick look over some of the reviews confirms his statement with people raving about the way they use their silicone baking cups to do everything from freezing excess stock in perfect portions to using them in their children's lunchboxes as dividers. Most people agree that these seemingly simple silicone alternatives solve problems they didn't even know they had. For example, their cupcake liners are sturdy enough to use without a baking pan yet compact enough to throw in a drawer which makes these new-age baking marvels a huge hit. The non-stick surface and the way food seems to just "pop out" with ease seem to be the biggest advantages for most people.

But are they safe?

Let's start with the basics. Silicone is a man-made substance produced by combining oxygen with silicon. It is an FDA approved "food-safe" substance that is inert and will not react with food or liquids nor give off chemical fumes. It can also be recycled after a lifetime of use. This brings up one of the biggest buzzwords in the sector, "BPA-Free."

According to the Mayo Clinic, "BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s." While the FDA claims that studies show small amounts of BPA exposure to be harmless, most people prefer the old adage, "better safe than sorry." Knowing that this is one of the big concerns for its target market, Bakelove.ly released this statement, "We only use the highest quality, BPA-free, food-grade silicone available for all of our products because consumer safety is our main concern." The bottom line is, to date, all testing points to silicone being safer than teflon, which is in everyone's kitchen on any number of pots and pans.

Silicone cookware has a number of advantages including being lightweight, flexible, non-stick, non-toxic as well as temperature and stain resistant. The biggest disadvantage seems to be that it is a bit pricier than traditional materials at this point. Callwood counters this by saying, "Which is more expensive? A one-time investment for a product that will literally last a lifetime with proper care or the cost of gas for trips to the store, the price of constantly buying tins or liners and the environmental cost of both those factors?"

So will Dade County earn the nickname "Silicone Beach?" Only time will tell. For now, consumers are just happy to get their hands on these ingenious little baking cups that have many people reinventing the way they think about cupcake liners and what they can be used for.
