(Food-Beverage-News.Com, August 08, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – Los Angeles County, California is making sure everyone has the opportunity to eat a properly prepared, nutritious meal through its CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program.
In many cases the homeless, elderly and some people with disabilities are unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. Although California provides low income people with the ability to purchase food items at a store through the Golden State Advantage (EBT) program, the individual may still not have the physical ability, tools or a food-safe location to prepare and cook the food items. This leaves the person to rely on food service programs such as meals on wheels or soup kitchens whose service may be sporadic, limited to certain days or only once per day.
The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program allows this limited people group to purchase prepared meals at restaurants certified in the restaurant program. The program has been offered since 2005 and has become popular among food establishments. Now, as of July of this year, over 250 restaurants in Los Angeles County are participating, from one-owner establishments to national chains such as Subway and Church’s Chicken. This puts a participating restaurant within a short distance of almost any qualifying person needing a good meal.
