Type 2 Diabetes Can Be Avoided

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, August 01, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to recent clinical research led by Johns Hopkins scientists, the succession from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes is not unavoidable and lifestyle changes can normalize blood sugar levels. Assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Nisa Maruthur, M.D., M.H.S., led the research. A report on her study was published online this week in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

If people diagnosed with pre-diabetes lose approximately 10 percent of their body weight within six months, then they significantly lessen the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes over the next three years, the experiment concludes. The study offers physicians and patients guidance as to how short-term behavior changes can affect the patient’s long-term health. "We have known for some time that the greater the weight loss, the lower your risk of diabetes," says Maruthur. "Now we understand that we can see much of the benefit of losing that weight in those first six months when people are adjusting to a new way to eating and exercising. Substantial weight loss in the short term clearly should go a long way toward preventing diabetes." This prevention in the pre-diabetes stage is critical to stop the disease from becoming full-blown diabetes.

Excess sugar in the blood or diabetes, if left unchecked, can lead to cardiovascular disease as well as nerve, kidney and eye damage. If people with pre-diabetes do not lose enough weight in those first months, the research suggests doctors consider a more aggressive treatment – possibly adding medication to the program.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), America’s largest diabetes prevention study supplied the data from which Maruthur and her colleagues based their analysis and conclusions. Between 1996 and 1999, hyperglycemic, overweight people were studied for an average of 3.2 years. Twenty-seven academic medical centers with over 3,000 participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo, doses of the diabetes drug metformin designed to reduce blood glucose (sugar) levels or intensive lifestyle intervention.
