Evidence has shown that light to moderate consumption, compared to abstaining versus heavy drinking can help prevent a range of diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, dementia, a stroke and many types of cancer.
Creina Stockley, Australian Wine Research Institute Scientist, says moderate intake over a regular period, not necessarily every day, is where literature shows the most health benefits. She says the science is also clear on how heavy and binge drinking are very closely associated with adverse health outcomes.
The new research will be delivered this week by scientists at the international WineHealth13 conference in Sydney. National health guidelines, which are relevant for for the majority of the people, encourage limiting the amount of alcohol consumption.
