(Food-Beverage-News.Com, March 07, 2013 ) Katy, TX -- According to new findings, half a bar of chocolate is just as satisfying as a full one.
Ellen van Kleef, Mitsuru Shimizu, and Brian Wansink from Cornell University have designed a study to determine whether or not persons give smaller portions of snack foods would be either hungrier or more satisfied after 15 minutes following consumption. The researchers used of chocolate chips, apple pie, and potato chips.
Two groups were give different portion sizes of the foods. The larger portion-size group was given 100 grams of chocolate, 200 grams of apple pie, 80 grams of potato chips, which are all larger-than-average portions according to size recommendations.
The foods equaled 1,370 calories in snack foods, while the other group was give 10 grams, 40 grams, and 10 grams of the same foods respectively. The total for the second group was 195 calories.
Each group was given as much time as necessary, and were both asked to fill out surveys to rate the liking, familiarity, and boredom with the food. They were each asked to rate their overall craving and hunger before and after the foods consumption.
The results showed that the smaller-portion group showed similar feelings of satisfaction as the larger-portion group, according to the researchers.
Those who were given 77% more food, which amounted to 103 calories more, did not feel an appetite enhancing or stronger feeling of overall satisfaction, as compared to the smaller group.
The findings are important to note in regards to overall portion sizes. While larger portions increase food intake, smaller portions result in equivalent satisfaction.
One important note to consider, is that each group was given that amount, and there was not an option for individuals to ask for seconds or higher portions of food. Given the opportunity to have more food, satisfaction for the smaller-portioned group may wane in comparison to the large-portion group.
