(Food-Beverage-News.Com, February 16, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- On Monday, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had a sit-down with David Letterman on Monday night, and stated that it was okay to laugh about his obvious weight problem. In a news conference on Tuesday, Christie admitted that weight control is still a serious topic of discussion as many struggle to control their calorie and quality-food intake. Christie admitted his own obesity could be a factor if he chooses to run for president in th future.
Dr. Connie Marino, who was the White House physician, stated, "When somebody who has morbid obesity is running around, he's probably got heart disease and continued stress and eventually will have a heart attack. So that's the time-bomb theory. It's bound to happen if he continues that lifestyle."
Mariano was the physician for former President Bill Clinton, who was another president whose fondness for all things dipped in batter and fried was used as fodder for late-night scrutiny. In 2004 Clinton went through quadruple bypass surgery, and recently opened up about his becoming a vegan in order to reverse the effects of his heart disease.
Christie is certainly not about to take an about-face and become a vegan himself, but Christ stated on Tuesday that he is not unlike a lot of Americans who are working through their respective health problems that include overconsumption of food. He stated to the press that "I'm making the best effort I can. And sometimes I'm successful, and other times I'm not. And sometimes periods of great success are followed by periods of great failure."
At the same time, Christie may not be as unhealthy as he looks, according to particular studies. In one such study released last month, researchers found that while some people are obese and have a higher risk of death, the body-mass index is a flawed system, and does not take into account over 90% of the factors that 'lie underneath the surface'. Nor does the study take into account one's natural body-type. The study does not state that the BMI should be ignored, however, but simply notes it does not tell the whole story.
Christie told Letterman on Monday that his cholesterol and blood sugar levels were normal, and added "I'm basically the healthiest fat guy you've seen in your entire life."
