Study Shows Reduced Fat Means Slimmer Waist and BMI Total reports Effective Fat Burners

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 27, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- In a study that should shock just about nobody, it was found that reducing fat intake will lead to reduced body weight, body mass index, and waist size in adults. The effect is proven to be more effective that it works even when a loss in size is not the intended outcome, according to the meta-analysis published in the BMJ.

The finding, while not awe-inspiring, do give credence to the effect of reducing fat intake to less than 30% of the energy intake, and the ability to reduce related mortality.

"The effect on health of an individual reducing his or her body weight by 1.6 kg is likely to be small, but the effects of a whole population doing so would be noticeable," say Lee Hooper (Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, UK) and co-authors.

The World Health Organization Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group on diet and health took note of the relationship between fat intake and bodyweight. Hooper and colleagues used 33 controlled trials which measured intervention of reductions in fat intake. The studies were not specific to weight loss studies. The duration of the studies was between 26 weeks and eight years.

The participants were assigned to participate in one of two groups, both regular fat intake as well as reduced intake. The average effect of the decreased group was a 1.57 kg of weight loss. According to the study, each 1% of reduction in energy was associated with a 0.19-kg of body weight.

Significant reduction of both BMI and waist circumference was seen in the groups with lower fat intake. Auxiliary improvements were found in the group's blood pressure and total cholesterol.

Hooper and his colleagues stated that the effect were in keeping with those found in children and adolescents.

The study group noted that there is still a need for higher-quality trials to examine the total outcome.
