(Food-Beverage-News.Com, November 21, 2012 ) Colorado Springs, CO -- Personal trainer Annie Padrid, a 29-year-old University of Michigan graduate and former Bally Fitness trainer, devotes classes in her innovative studio The Space to transforming the lives of clients by focusing them on “functional fitness.”
The Hyde Park, Illinois facility is out of the ordinary, and not just for its décor of pure white walls and floor-to-ceiling windows. Opened in March, the airy, light-filled gym focuses on training its clients – who come in a variety of sizes, ages and health conditions -- to cope with the physical demands of daily life.
Despite their diverse needs, Padrid’s clients all receive demanding workouts designed for the goal of improving their strength, stamina and agility and avoiding injury in meeting their day-to-day physical challenges.
For example, Padrid starts off one older woman client who wants help with her balance problems with warm-up exercises on a treadmill and exercise bike. Then the studio owner guides the client through a series of balance exercises using a Bosu ball, providing as needed a steadying hand and a constant stream of encouragement.
Other clients seek out The Space for help in dealing with pulmonary conditions, joint problems or other conditions. They all get personalized attention, and say they keep coming back to The Space because of the results they see in Padrid’s upbeat, total body health approach.
Rather than overnight success, Padrid’s functional fitness approach aims to instill positive lifestyles, not just drill exercise routines. Her studio makes referrals to a wide variety of other professionals for services like massage and nutrition counseling. The Space’s diverse offerings include personal training, group exercise and yoga classes, and stretch therapy.
Despite the caring approach, The Space provides demanding workouts for those looking for them. One room of The Space has a full complement of state-of-the-art exercise machines surrounded by exercise bikes and treadmills.
One of its most popular offering is Padrid’s boot camp program. It begins with a five-minute warm-up session on treadmills, then moves onto fast-paced lower-body exercises using a Bosu ball. Next, trainees sprint around a nearby park, holding above their heads five-pound weights, which Padrid periodically urges them to pump in the air 20 times.
Back inside The Space, trainees are put through push-ups and squat exercises. Then, they run back to the park for more sprints, this time with hands behind their back as they interrupt the run at regular intervals by performing 10 jump squats. More Bosu ball work for lower-body muscles and a final spin on the exercise bikes round off a typical boot camp session.
Padrid also hosts RunThisTownCHI, the local chapter of a social fitness workout group started in Detroit, which conducts weekly sessions of exercises and social networking.
