Apple Strudel is the national dish of Austria and traditionally has a filling of grated apples, breadcrumbs, cinnamon, sugar and raisins. These ingredients are combined and rolled in a paper-thin sheet of dough and baked. Once baked, it is the thinness of the pastry that gives the strudel its characteristic crispiness.

The origins of Apple Strudel date back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, or Habsburg Empire, of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and is a dish influenced by many different cultures, including Turkish, French, Swiss, German, Dutch, Italian, German, Hungarian, Polish, Bohemian-Moravian, Jewish and other eastern and southern countries of Europe.
Strudel itself is a German word and is derived from the Middle High German word for whirlpool or eddy. In Hungarian the Apple Strudel variant is known as Almasretes, and in German as Apfelstrudel.
