The experiment lasted for three week and included sixty participants between the ages of 35 and 45 and whose body mass index (BMI) was greater than 25. Obesity medicine specialist Hsiao Tun-jen conducted the experiment.
The participants were divided into two groups - an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group consumed 450ml of high-fiber, sugar-free soy milk everyday for 12 weeks, 30 minutes before lunch and dinner time. The control group did not drink any soy milk. In addition, every week during the trial, both groups attended an hour long exercise session and a half hour lecture on nutrition.
Results showed that the experimental group reduced their body fat percentage by an average of 5.7 percent, whereas the control group decreased by only 4 percent. Furthermore, Hsiao discovered that the experimental group showed a decrease in blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipid levels. The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level was reduced by 15 percent.
Between the two groups, the difference in the decrease of body fat percentage might not be statistically significant as a result of the shortness of the study, said Hsiao, and the results should be explored further.
According to Hsiao, the results were encouraging.
Lee Tzu-Yi, a nutritionist, explained that sugar-free, high-fiber soy milk before meals can stimulate the colon and extend the feeling of being full. He also emphasized the fact that people must adjust their habits, for instance eating a balanced diet to regulate weight and engaging in regular exercise.
