(Food-Beverage-News.Com, May 19, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study suggests that the normal western diet of fried chicken and sweet sweet candies with diets high in red meat, refined grains, and high-fat dairy products found in a so-called "Western" diet and opting for something a little healthier.
The study followed 5,350 British men and women with an average age of 51 over the course of 16 years. Researchers compiled data every five years including their eating habits, hospital records, and mortality rates. The study compared those unhealthy eating habits with others who ate fruits, vegetables and fish as part of the Alternative Healthy Eating Index, a program developed by a Harvard team as an alternative to USDA guidelines.
During follow up, the researchers found that 13% of the subjects had a nonfatal cardiovascular issue, 3% died from heart-related causes, and 70% died from other causes. Those who ate a Western diet were less likely to have ideal aging.
Tasnime Akbaraly, lead author of the study conducted at the University College London said being more aware of how the foods we eat impact our overall health may provide the incentive to improve public health education programs.
The Mediterranean diet that has been long suggested to be much healthier than fatty foods, includes fish, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy oils is the best choice for good health. Perhaps it will prompt more people to eat these by knowing that it affects the outside of the body just as much as the inside.
