The recent study actually expressed that chewing gum may lead to one eating more items like chips, cookies, and candy instead of fruits and veggies. That is due to the menthol, which is a chemical responsible for the minty flavor that is found in many gums. The compound is said to make some fruits and veggies taste funny to those who are consistent gum chewers.
The chemical change is the same reason that when one brushes one's teeth, orange juice tastes bad or funny. This, according to the study's co-author Christine Swoboda, who is a doctoral candidate in nutrition at Ohio State University.
Chew gum can aid in general performance, however, and xylitol-sweetened gum may reduce the onset of ear infection in children who chew. Because it may evoke thoughts of food and get one's digestive tract running, some hypothesized that the chewing of gum actually could make people more hungry than they were prior to chewing. However, scientists have also considered the opposite to be a possibility. To test the claim, Wrigley (one of the largest gum manufacturers) made offers for grants for the scientific research within the subject.
Despite the claims to the contrary, only a small minority of studies have looked at whether gum chewing promotes or hinders weight loss. Most have found only conflicting results, according to Swoboda.
"We were interested in seeing 'Does this really help with weight loss?'" Swoboda told LiveScience.
