Fitting into your Jeans May be in Your Genes reports Vibraslim

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, January 12, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It is not merely what you eat that makes your pants not fit like they use to. It can also be your genetics that gets in the way of you losing the pounds that you want to.

According to a new study, it has been discovered that body-fat responses to typical high-fat-content food like fast-food are determined by some genetic factors. Those factors have been identified as several genes that scientists say may control the various responses to storing fat.

The study is the first to be done on the metabolic response to high-fat/high-sugar diet in a diverse mouse population under well-defined environmental conditions, which models what is likely to occur in human populations.

“Our research demonstrates that body-fat responses to high-fat, high-sugar diets have a very strong genetic component, and we have identified several genetic factors potentially regulating these responses,” first author Dr Brian Parks, a postdoctoral researcher at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA said.

“We found that obesity has similar genetic signatures in mice and humans, indicating the mice are a highly relevant model system to study obesity. Overall, our work has broad implications concerning the genetic nature of obesity and weight gain,” he said.

The increase in obesity over the past third of a century has been associated with the increase in conditions such as type 2 diabetes, as well as heart disease and cancer.

While high-calorie diets containing intensive levels of fat and sugar, along with a sedentary lifestyle, is certainly a factor in the epidemic, the UCLA research shows that DNA is also an important factor.

The researched noted that the over-consuming of high-calorie and/or high-sugar diet is an important factor for certain. However, stress that food consumption is only one of the many factors that affect the overall obesity response that the body can enact.

The finding have recently been published in the online edition of Cell Metabolism.
