New Drink Purported to Aid Weight Loss, Treat Diabetes reports Sila Live

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, December 02, 2012 ) Fishers, IN -- A new drink has been developed by researchers at England's Oxford University. The drink reportedly has the ability to aid in weight loss as well as reduce symptoms related to diseases such as diabetes, epilepsy and even Alzheimer's disease.

The drink was developed under the guidance of Keiran Clarke, head of Oxford's Cardiac Metabolism Research Group and a professor of physiological biochemistry at the university, following a request by the U.S. Army.

Ketones, the foundation for the drink, are produced by the body naturally. They are natural sources of energy that occurs when the body begins processing the fat stored when no carbohydrates are available to process.

Ketones become more prevalent in the body in the days following a prolonged fast or after being on certain diets, like the Atkins Diet. This is to keep one's body full of energy, especially one's muscles and brain.

Through their work, Professor Clarke and his researchers have been able to create ketones in their laboratory. The thinking is that rather than having to deprive themselves for several days to develop ketones, they can be added to a normal diet through the drink.

Diets like Atkins have received bad press in the past few years because of some of the side effects that the diets cause, such as constipation and kidney failure.

High-fat diets, also known as ketogenic diets, work because of the release of ketones by the body. When the body has no carbohydrates to process, it begins releasing stored fat,. Those fats are then turned into energy by the liver. This causes the blood sugar levels in the body to reduce.

Professor Clarke has completed the first trial for the drink on humans, following several rounds with lab animals. The eight human participants all had diabetes and ingested three ketone-based drinks per day for one week.

The research showed that, similar to the rats from earlier trials, the humans lost weight and saw a reduction in their cholesterol, fat, and glucose levels. As a result, they had more energy and participated in more exercises.
